Governance in North Eastern Indian state Tripura is now poised for leap up with successful completion of the State Wide Area Network (Swan) project in January this year. Tripura has become the sixth state in the country to have successfully commissioned this project after Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh and Delhi.
Tripura has chosen National Informatics Centre (NIC) to establish the Swan by suitably extending the existing NICNET up to block level. NIC is the prime implementation agency for the establishment, operation and maintenance of the network as an integral part of NICNET, with an appropriate end-to-end service level agreement.
Tripura Swan is a state wide computer data, voice and video network connecting 60 points of presence (PoPs) connected to the optical fibre cable (OFC) backbone up to block level. Presently, 48 PoPs are connected and remaining 12 PoPs would be connected in next two months.
Swan has been identified as one of the three core infrastructure projects for supporting e-Governance initiatives in the states. It is envisaged as the converged backbone network for data, voice and video communications throughout the state and is expected to cater to the information communication requirements of all the departments. The creation of such a service delivery infrastructure by the states has been acknowledged as critical for the effective and cost efficient deployment of e-Governance.
